Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, titles to spine with lion centre tools in compartments gilt, raised bands, signature block to front board gilt, twin rule to turn-ins gilt, burgundy endpapers, gilt edges. A fine copy. Full-page map of China to the text, folding map of Europe at the rear. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed in the month of publication on the front free endpaper: "To Percy Davies from Winston S. Churchill, June 1939". Major Percy Davies (1892-1946) was editor of the News of the World, Churchill having contributed articles to the newspaper during the 1930s. In 1938, when Churchill was asking questions of Britain's readiness for war, "many people took it for granted that Britain was already strong, and even the News of the World, which had on May 1 published Churchill's major warning, began to assure readers that all was well. On June 5 Churchill was 'astonished' to read an article on these lines, writing in a 'private & secret' letter to Major Percy Davies: 'There is at the present time an almost total absence of defence, apart from the RAF, for our cities and vulnerable points " (Martin Gilbert, Winston S. Churchill, Volume V, p. 944). Davies had served as a major commanding 12 Corps Cyclist Battalion in Italy and France, 1916-18 and had been captured by the Germans on the western front in April 1918. Step by Step gathers together Churchill's weekly commentaries, originally published in the Evening Standard and syndicated throughout Europe, arguing against appeasement. The book was described on the jacket blurb as "this luminous survey of our own amazing and perilous times." On receiving his copy from Churchill, Clement Attlee wrote; "It must be a melancholy satisfaction to you to see how right you were." Cohen A111.1.a; Woods A45 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
