Que faire? Roman.
Lodi, 'En Vente chez tous les Libraires', Società Tipografica P. Vitali e Comp [printer of the Italian Socialist journal La Plebe], 1875. Simply held together with a strip of stiff paper, original lower wrapper preserved. (2), X, 532, (4) p. Uncut. First edition. Upper wrapper and backstrip have gone. A bit foxed and soiled.l Very rare first French edition of the famous 'nihilist' novel by Nikolaj Chernyshevsky, Shto delat'? or What Shall We Do?. It was translated by Benoît Malon, Aleksjej Tveritinov (who also was responsible for the lengthy preface), César de Paepe and Jules Guesde. Printed in Italy, the book was chock full of mistakes, needing four pages (in small print) of errata at the end, and even the name of the author on the title page is misspelled as 'Tchernycheswky'. The upper cover has been lost, but on the lower cover an earlier book by Tchernychewsky is mentioned, L'economie politique jugee par la science (Critique des principes d'economie politique de John-Stuart Mill), citing reviews by Karl Marx and Benoît Malon! Not in Worldcat.
