- BRITISH EMPIRE THROUGHOUT THE WORLDExhibited in one view. by John Bartholomew Published by Archibald Fullarton, London & Edinburgh circa 1865 in"The Royal Illustrated Atlas of Modern Geography"  A highly decorative large format original antique map of the world displaying the British Empire in red. A sought after and iconic map richly illustrated with figures representing the populations of the various component countries of the empire as extant in the mid 19th century.These include "Natives of British Asia and of East Indian Islands", "Natives of British Empire in Europe", "Cape Colony and Southern Africa", "Australian Settlers and Natives" and "North Americans, white and copper coloured".Two tables display the populations and areas in square miles of each British possession.  A crisp impression enhanced with original colouring, printed on heavy grade paper, blank verso. Central fold as issued. Fine condition other than minor age related blemishes as seen. Free of repairs or restoration. Approx. 23"x 18" (580mm x 470mm) overall.  Please see also close up images. Archibald Fullarton (1809 -1896) originally published his Royal Illustrated Atlas from 1852 as a part work and it remains an iconic atlas characterized by finely detailed engraving and wonderful illustrations.
