A Leaf From the Mercator-Hondius World Atlas, Edition of 1619 with an Essay by Norman J.W. Thrower
(Fullerton, CA): Stone & Lorson, 1985. Folio. 23pp. From an edition of 115 copies, this is one of 89 copies quarter-bound in vellum, together with an original bifolium leaf from the edition of 1619. This copy contains a full hand-colored map of Palatinatus Bavariae in southwestern Germany, complete with text, which commences with a 10-line decorative initial. The essay by Thrower begins with a chapter on earlier geographical atlases from the first years A.D. of Ptolemy in Alexandria to Renaissance map production, and unfolds into the vast cartographic undertakings of Gerard Mercator, Jodocus Hondius, and their successors. The volume's design is by Vance Gerry and the presswork has been done by Patrick Reagh. Leaf shows light foxing. Few tiny nicks to spine, otherwise fine. Housed in a black cloth slipcase, slightly worn. Bookplate. (Chalmers 186).
