Gilles Robert de Vaugondy, Paris 1750 - Map. Engraving with hand outline color. Image measures 18.75 x 23.25" This beautiful map of European Russia or the western part of the Russian Empire covers from Poland and the Baltic eastward to Ilimskoy, Siberia. Includes an early mapping of Nouvelle Zemble or Novaya Zemlya. Labels provinces, towns, and topography rendered in profile. An elegantly engraved title cartouche features polar bears and three wind heads. The map is in very good condition with minor toning along the centerfold and minimal foxing. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) was an important French mapmaker during the 18th century. His "Atlas Universel" was one of the most significant atlases of the period, integrating older sources with more modern surveyed maps in order to convey correct geographical and political information. This map of European Russia demonstrates his commitment to detail.
