Imprenta de Francisco da Silva, Lisboa 1748 - "Notable First Edition: Science & Astronomy In Jesuit Missions In Paraguay. Written By an Argentinean Jesuit". 8vo.; full contemporary calf. ONE OF THE MOST DESIRABLE SCIENCE BOOKS RELATED TO SOUTH AMERICA, the extremely rare first edition of this Astronomy book written by an Argentinean Jesuit (1678-1756), who was in charge of building the first observatories in the Jesuit Missions of the Rio de la Plata and Paraguay. His deep scientific knowledge and remarkable manual skill allowed him, with the help of the Indians of San Cosme and San Damián Missions, to build instrumental material to be used for the observations; the work contains the "main aspects of the sun and the moon, conjunctions, moon quarters, and. the eclipses which shall be seen by all the century in these Missions of the COMPAÑIA DE JESUS in the Province of Paraguay". Moreover, the author provides easy rules to create an astronomy book of this kind from 1842 to 1903. Extremely important for the history of science in America; we have found no other copy to be sold in auctions in the last 30 years. Of utmost interest for the history of science in America. * WorldCat: only ONE copy (JCB); Medina, J.T. Bib. hispano-chilena, 3496; Palau y Dulcet (2nd ed.), 323200; Landis, D.C.
