This major monograph on the most prominent Latvian artist Sigismund Vidbergs written by journalist and writer Olgerts Liepins describes the artist's life, worldview and creativity. Separately considered main works of an artist: lesbian illustrations for a poetry collection "Songs of Bilitis" and erotic folio "Kama Sutra". Also reviewed Vidbergs significant contribution to the book's graphics (covers design, illustrations, ex-librises, vignettes, posters etc.), logos creation, theatre scenery and stage costume design. Besides 44 pages of text with numerous illustrations artist's monograph includes 52 full-page reproduction plates. The virtuoso of Latvian graphic art, Latvian grand master of modernism Sigismunds Vidbergs (1890-1970) is distinguished by his contemporary perception and depiction of the world, his capacity for bringing together current trends and classical values in art. Artists' creation was close to the aesthetics of "Mir Iskusstva". His pen and ink drawings, stylistically refined and technically perfect, are the hallmark of his graphic art. The artist addressed a wide range of subjects: historical and contemporary motifs, urban and rural life, religious scenes, portraits, studies of architecture and nature. However, Vidbergs is best known in the general panorama of Latvian art for his elegant interpretations of erotic motifs, retaining a classical sense of measure even when addressing very risqué themes. Sometimes artists' courageous art provoked public moral outrage, but his position in the Latvian art scene remained one of the strongest. The imagery he created places him among Latvia’s most important Art Deco artists. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
