Seven loose volumes: Volume 33 (January, 1838); 35 (January, 1839); 37 (October, 1839); 38 (April, 1840); 40 (April 1841); 41 (October 1841); 42 (April 1842). Bound in contemporary half-leather and marbled paper-covered boards. Illustrated with engraved and plates, some folding. Ex-library set with bookplates on the front patesdowns. Volumes 41-42 with binder's ticket: "J.Gillanders, Oberlin O." on the front pastedown. Leather spines are dry, scattered foxing, a good or better set. Incomplete seven-volume run from 1838-1842 of "Silliman's Journal," devoted to the publication of original papers, notices, and reviews in the broad field of the natural and physical sciences. Owned and edited by Benjamin Silliman, professor of chemistry and natural history at Yale College, it was the world's leading scientific journal in the first half of the 19th Century. The set features Silliman's printed correspondence with distinguished scientists throughout the world, and numerous papers on American geology, topography, botany, and zoology, and more general works on chemistry, physics, and mechanics. .
