Filmer, a conservative English political theorist who defended monarchy and the divine right of kings, is best known as the author of The Free-Holder's Grand Inquest (1648), and the present work. First published posthumously in 1680, it was widely debated and rebutted in such works as John Locke's Two Treatises of Government (1689) and Algernon Sidney's Discourses Concerning Government (1698). As indicated by the title of the second edition, the editor responds to another critical response: James Tyrrell's Patriarcha non Monarcha: The Patriarch Unmonarch's (1681).
