Technik des Kunsthandwerks im Zehnten Jahrhundert des Theophilus Presbyter. Diversarum artium schedula. In Auswahl neu herausgegeben, übersetzt und erläutert von Wilhelm Theobald.
Berlin: VDI-Verlag, 1933. - Theophilus Dictionary of Scientific Biography article author Cyril Stanley Smith's copy of the First Edition, with his signature. xxxi, 553 pp; 152 illus.; 4 maps. 3/4-leather and marbled boards, 4to. Very Good. Smith's D.S.B. article is in Vol. XIII, pp. 326-8. 'All the [earlier] eds. were mainly art-historical or philological in purpose. The first to be edited primarily for its technical content was the text, and German trans., of bks. II and III by Wilhelm Theobald, Technik des Kunsthandwerks im zehtnen [sic] Jahrhundert des Theophilus Presbyter Diversarum artium schedula. (Berlin, 1933) [offered here]' (D.S.B. XIII: 328). Smith translated this work into English along with J. G. Hawthorne under the title On Divers Arts (Chicago, 1963). 'Theophilus' Schedula [3 vols., ca. 1125] allows detailed insights into the techniques used in the applied arts in the high Middle Ages. The work is divided into three volumes. The first covers the production and use of painting and drawing materials (painting techniques, paints, and inks), especially for illumination of texts and painting of walls. The second deals with the production of stained glass and techniques of glass painting, while the last deals with various techniques of goldsmithing. It also includes an introduction into the building of organs' (Wikipedia). 'Very little would be known about glass technology in the Middle Ages if it were not for the diligent work of a monk, Theophilus Presbyter, who wrote, around the year 1000, a comprehensive technological manual entitled 'Diversarum Artium Schedula'. Today only eight handwritten copies of it can be found in European Libraries. Conceptually very modern and enlightening, the book describes in practical detail, and with some fantasy, the state of the art of a set of technologies or manufacturing processes, one of which was glass manufacturing' (Lorenzo Matteoli's Web site).
