DRY GUILLOTINE: Fifteen Years among the Living Dead
New York: Blue Ribbon Books, Inc, 1940. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. An early reprint. Classic memoir of Belbenoit's escape from Devil's Island, the notorious penal colony of French Guiana. Belbenoit (1899-1959) actually wrote the manuscript while in prison and carried the work wrapped in oilskins, to protect it from the elements. Protected in this manner, the manuscript survived countless rainstorms and unexpected dunkings in the ocean and rivers between Cayenne and California, where Belbenoit finally managed to reach the United States and freedom in 1937. Inscribed by Belbenoit to screenwriter Jack Moffitt on the front flyleaf. Octavo. Original blue cloth binding, with black stamping. Light fading to the extremities of the boards. Some very mild edgewear to the dust jacket, which is a trifle sun faded along the spine; otherwise very good.
