Photograph): Soldiers in Vinton, Louisiana. Circa 1900
Vinton, La 1900 - Albumen photograph. 7" x 4.25" mounted on 10" x 8" card stock. Flaw to emulsion in lower left corner, slight chips in upper righthand corner, but a nice, deep image, thus near very good. The image shows ten men in uniforms, probably officers, on the front porch of the building signed "Frank B. Gilbreth, General Contractor, Camp No. 1, Vinton, La." The sign also gives a New York City address, Gilbreth's headquarters. Contractor Gilbreth, along with his wife, is best-known for his principles of scientific management as it applied to business and manufacturing, and was made famous by his children in their book Cheaper by the Dozen, a memoir about how he tried to use scientific principles to manage his unruly brood of a dozen children. Their studies lead to the modern science of ergonomics. Vinton, near the Texas border, was well-known for its lumber industry.
