Letty Lynton Case Briefs 1933 - Sheldon & Barnes vs Metro-Goldwyn [Joan Crawford movie]
1933 - Bound volume of 6 original legal briefs concerning the Letty Lynton case, 1933, Sheldon & Barnes vs Metro-Goldwyn Pictures, et al. A series of original briefs re the copyright infringement case brought against Metro-Goldwyn over the Joan Crawford movie, Letty Lynton. The movie was banned in England on grounds that it "justified homicide". This volume is from the collection of legendary copyright lawyer Herman Finkelstein, ASCAP general counsel, featuring Nathan Burkan and J. Robert Rubin as Attorneys for the Defendants. (See Finkelstein's name bottom spine). The defendants in these briefs, Metro-Goldwyn, et al, were successful in obtaining denial of the motion for temporary injunction against showing of the film. However, the plaintiffs were eventually successful, and Letty is not widely available today because of a 1936 appeals court decision that ruled MGM violated copyright laws by too closely following the script of "Dishonored Lady", the 1930 play by Edward Sheldon and Margaret Ayer Barnes.
