Our Mutual Friend
London - Chapman and Hall, 1865 Book. Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The first edition of Charles Dickens' final novel. Intwo volumes, with half-titles. With a frontispiece and nineteen plates to volume I, frontispiece and nineteen plates to volume II. Lacking publisher's advertisements as was bound without. Our Mutual Friend was written in the years 1864-1865 and was one of his most sophisticated works. He combines satire with social analysis and centres on money. The work begins with the death of John Harmon, with his body being found in the Thames. The tale is one of hidden identities, love and monetary greed. The work was not considered to be one ofhis greatest successes at its time of publication. During the first round of publishing fewer than 30,000 copies were sold. Condition: In half calf bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, rubbed to the spines and extremities. Patches of rubbing to the boards. Small loss to the head and tail of spines and to the extremities. Spine labels are no longer readable due to rubbing. Prior owner's inscription to title page of volume II, Georgiana S Williams. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age tonedto edges with light scattered spots. Overall: GOOD..
