Following the Equator. A Journey Around the World.
Hartford, Connecticut: The American Publishing Company, 1897 - Large octavo (222 x 141 mm). Bound by Stikeman & Co. New York in near-contemporary red crushed half morocco with red cloth sides, rebacked with original spine laid down, gilt lettered direct to spine, gilt tooled compartments within five raised bands, gilt rules to covers, light green marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Bookplate to pastedown. Slight marking to covers, tips refurbished. A very good copy. Portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard, 193 illustrations by 11 different illustrators. First edition, first issue. This copy with the favoured single Hartford imprint, and the signature mark 11 at p. 161. Having invested heavily in revolutionary but flawed typesetting machinery, by 1894 Twain was practically bankrupt. His solution was to undertake a tour of the British Empire, ensuring an enthusiastic audience for his lectures in every port of call, and providing material for this highly successful account. BAL 3451. [Attributes: First Edition]
