Bullets & Billets.
London: Grant Richards Ltd., December 1916 - Octavo. Original red pictorial cloth, title and images in black to upper board and spine. With the dust jacket. Contemporary gift inscription to the front free endpaper. Faintest spotting to edges, but an excellent copy with the dust jacket lightly marked and with a few closed tears but nonetheless complete. Portrait frontispiece, pictorial title page and 17 other plates, numerous illustrations to the text. First edition, first impression, in the rare jacket. "No list of books on the Great War can be complete without those of Captain Bruce Bairnsfather. Superior persons and those who wish to impress the younger generation with the horror and beastliness of war sneer at his drawings to-day but to us in those old days they meant a great deal, sometimes everything for a week on end He did as much as most people to help us to endure what we had to endure" (Falls). Bairnsfather was a huge success from his first appearances in Bystander, this - his first book - was issued in a first impression of 50,000 copies in December 1916 and ran to a further 7 impressions in the next 2 years. Due to Bairnsfather's popularity, signed copies are not too hard to come by - however, copies with surviving jackets are rare. Falls pp.178-9 *; Holt p.244 [Attributes: First Edition]
