Pan and Peacocks
Boston: Four Seas, 1928. 1st ed. Hardcover. Very Good. 80p. Cloth-backed boards. 21cm. Small gouge in backstrip which is frayed along the top. Corner tips rubbed through. No Jacket. INSCRIBED on endpaper by Roberts in 1929 to Faith Van Valkenburgh Vilas who also wrote poetry. Roberts, who was born in Jamaica, is often mentioned or honored as one of the fathers of Jamaican independence. He is also often regarded as having some African ancestry although there is not much evidence to support this claim. Roberts emphatically denied having such ancestry. We find little evidence of any particular sympathy for persons of African descent in his writings.
