[Original Photograph Album of WWII-era Naval Service in Japan Aboard Patrol Ship PC-549]
np [Various], [ca. 1945-1946]. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 4to. leather album. 28 brown paper leaves with 146 original, black and white snapshot photograhs loosely mounted recto and verso in photo corners. 9 blank leaves at rear. Leather string binding loose, with sections of loss. Signatures laid-in loose. A handful of prints loose from mounts, a few apparently perished. Contents clean, well preserved. Generally very good. A compelling visual record of U.S. Naval service in Japan, aboard the PC-549, a PC-461 class, anti-submarine patrol ship. A unique vessell class, commissioned specifically for the war effort and built between 1941-1944. Unusually clear and well composed snapshots illustrate life at sea, in dock and on land in an unidentified Japanese port. While undated and lacking noatations, the absence of combat scenes and apparently cordial relations between the sailors and Japanese suggests a timeframe between September and November of 1945 when the ship is cited has having been in Japan for Navy occupation service. Notably serving aboard the PC-549 during this time was Lt. Louis Osborne Coxe, who would go on to a celebrated career as an American playwright, poet, and professor. Much of his work would be nautical-themed in nature and influenced profoundly by the time captured here. The ship was decommissioned in January of 1946. This album serves as a rich document of WWII-era operations in the Pacific and the earliest months of Japanese occupation.
