Recent brown crushed morocco by Bayntun-Rivière, raised bands to spine forming compartments, title direct to second gilt, twin rules to remaining compartments gilt, covers ruled in gilt with foliate extenders from spine tooled in blind, all edges gilt, inner dentelles richly gilt, marbled endpapers. Initial blank creased. An excellent copy in a fine binding. First UK edition, in a fine binding. Bates (1879-1939) was an American university professor of English and philosophy. His text excludes all chapter and verse markings and largely follows the King James version except for the Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs, where the revised version is used. Originally published in the US the preceding year.
