Autograph letter signed to Latimer Clark
1864. Very Good. Henley, William Thomas (1813?-82). A.L.s. to Latimer Clark. London, January 25, 1864. 2pp. 204 x 131 mm. 2 small holes punched in top margin. Provenance: Latimer Clark. Henley was the head of W. T. Henley and Company, manufacturers of nearly fourteen thousand miles of submarine cable. Henley's letter to Clark discusses submarine cables, most probably in connection with the second Atlantic cable project: "I enclose a piece of the cable which broke at 4-1/2 tons: it is just six inches long and I have caused it to be weighed both in air and in salt water same specific gravity as ordinary sea water. . . . "I hope something will turn up soon as I am very slack. I see from the Times Siemens [see no. 197] has broken his cable; if he fails altogether can this job not be obtained from the French Govt. I was very nearly getting it before Siemens stept in. This would be just the cable for it. I would take the job myself or in conjunction with you." Origins of Cyberspace 156.
