Historia Major, Juxta exemplar Londinense 1640, verbatim.chronique mss in Bibliotheca Regia, Collegii Corpus Christi.Editore Wilielmo Wats.
London A Mearne 1684 - Tall folio, pp [34], 1175, [130], engraved frontispiece portrait, irregularities of pagination as in ESTC, bound in contemporary polished calf, neatly rebacked with red label, a very good sound copy, THIRD AND BEST EDITION; Matthew Paris's chronciles of the early Norman kings is thought to be based upon an earlier work of Roger of Wendover, which itself derived from the Chronicle of St Albans. It was origiinally transcribed from the Oxford manuscript by Bishop Matthew Parker in 1571, but by the early 17th century the accuracy of Parker's work was being doubted. In 1640 William Watts produced a much better and more complete edition, basically the edition presented here with the addition of various notes, glossaries etc which ake this the definitive ediiton until more recent times. A very good copy.
