London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1867 - 2 volumes, octavo (214 x 135 mm). Contemporary black half calf, red spine labels, titles in gilt, spine decorated in gilt, marbled paper sides, endpapers, and edges. Leather lightly recoloured. Bookplate removed from front pastedowns, ink stamp to first front and rear blanks. Minor wear to tips, slight rubbing to sides, foxing to prelims and endmatter, small loss to bottom outer corner of pp. 251–2 in vol. I; a very good set. Frontispieces and 14 plates. First edition. The Claverings was originally published serially from February 1866 to May 1867 in the Cornhill Magazine. The title page of the US edition is predated to 1866 however was also published in 1867 although the exact date it uncertain; it is therefore unclear whether the US edition precedes the UK edition.
