London, New York: F. Tennyson Neely, Publisher, [1898].. Octavo, pp. [1-5] 6-224, original blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in red and silver (Neely's "bullseye" binding). First edition. Mystery novel features a Sherlockian detective with a doctor sidekick. The detective is taunted with a letter from a person claiming to have committed a recent murder in New York. According to Stuart Teitler (Kaleidoscope Books catalog #61), the story also involves a "particularly gruesome murder with clever background. Indian mystic and master hypnotist in castle with secret dungeon. Lots of fun." Harben, a Georgia novelist, also wrote the noteworthy hollow earth fantasy, THE LAND OF THE CHANGING SUN. Hubin, p. 371. Not in Wright (who took too literally the presence of "London" on Neely's title pages, and thus dismissed almost all their publications as foreign). A few tiny faint damp stains on front panel, a bit of faint foxing to page edges and offsetting to endpapers, a bright near fine copy of an uncommon book. (#149634)
