A collection of David Game College Group calendars, designed and with photographs by Jonathan Gili, for the years 1993-2006
London: Warren Editions - 14 calendars, 297 x 210mm; spiral-bound at head. Photographs by Jonathan Gili, illustrations by Hannah Firmin, Phillida Gili and Penelope Wilson. A documentary film-maker and collector extraordinary, Jonathan Gili (1943-2004) was also a quirky small-press publisher who deployed his eye for design not only for books as grand as John Betjeman's Metro-Land (1977, with lithographs by Glynn Boyd Harte) but also for calendars for his sometime school-friend David Game's group of tutorial colleges, founded in 1974. His photographs are sympathetic, artful and droll, whether capturing garden shadows at Hatfield, street shadows at Le Touquet, a no-entry sign in Prague or a duck at the National Theatre; whether snapping steps in Barcelona or pepper-pots in Seattle. "The eye that gave his films an effortless beauty," wrote Nicolas Barker in Gili's Independent obituary, "made his still photography as magical. An Instamatic in his hands produced prints, in black and white and then colour, that professional photographers could envy; they made the annual David Game College calendars collectors' pieces."
