Angle of Repose
Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1971. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good +. 8vo - over 7.75" to 9.75" tall, 569 pp. Wallace Earle Stegner (1909-1993) was often called "The Dean of Western Writers"; he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 and the U.S. National Book Award in 1977. A member of the faculty at Stanford University, Stegner founded their creative writing program; the Stegner Fellowship program at Stanford was named in his honour. This work is likely Stegner's best-known novel, the one for which he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972. The story revolves around a wheelchair-using historian, Lyman Ward, who has lost connection with his son and living family and decides to write about his frontier-era grandparents. The novel is directly based on the letters of Mary Hallock Foote (and is so acknowledged by Stegner at the beginning of the book), however, his use of substantial passages from Foote's actual letters as the correspondence of his fictional character Susan Burling Ward was and remains controversial among some scholars. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Angle of Repose #82 on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. (N.B., above info from Wiki).***DESCRIPTION: Bound in sage green cloth with gilt lettering on the front and spine, the front lettering surrounded by a blind embossed stylized wreath, green endpapers, code "M4" in the gutter margin of page 569; octavo size (just under 8" tall), pagination: (1)-569. The dust jacket shows the original price of $7.95, has a decoration on the front also of a wreath with the title in its midst in red lettering bordered in black, same red/black lettering on the spine, photo of author with short bio below on the back panel, summary of the book on the front flap continuing on the back flap.***CONDITION: Volume is fine overall, the binding clean and unworn, the corners straight and unrubbed, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; there is an extremely shallow, short indentation to the top edge of the front board, else fine. The unclipped dust jacket is almost near fine, there is some fairly minor edgewear most noticeable at the head and tail of the spine, and some light soiling to the spine; however, the spine lettering remains bright, the red unsunned.***CITATION: Colberg A22.1.a.***POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
