This work was published anonymously but is known to be by the Irish philosopher, George Berkeley (1685-1753), appointed Bishop of Cloyne, 1734. Berkeley was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and was a Senior Fellow. While in London, he established contacts with Addison and Steele, Swift and Pope and later travelled in France and Italy. Alciphron was published during a period of residence in Middletown, Rhode Island, when he was still hoping funds would be made available to found a college in Bermuda. It is 'a set of dialogues located notionally in England, but drawing much of the landscape description from Rhode Island, which was to sell well and stimulate controversy after his return. In this, theist and immaterialist combine their defences against a medley of intellectual trends.that Berkeley regarded as obstructive to religion' (DNB). ESTC notes that this fourth edition is a reissue of the third with a cancel title page and records only two copies, in Scottish and Irish libraries.
