My Life. A Record of Events and Opinions.
Chapman & Hall. 1905. 8vo. 2 vols. Publisher's dark green cloth, blind fillet border to sides, gilt lettering to uppers and spines; pp. xii + 435 errata slip, viii + 459, 57 illustrations; a little rubbed to extremities, occasional spotting, otherwise very good. Provenance: with presentation bookplate of Alexander Macalister to Westminster College Library Cambridge to front pastedowns, with college library stamps to ffeps and p. 51 of vol I and library plates to rear pastedowns. Alexander Macalister (1844 - 1919) was Professor of Anatomy at Cambridge from 1883 until his death, as the bookplate here records. His most famous work is his Textbook of Human Anatomy (1889), which quickly became the standard work, but he was also renowned as an expert on animal morphology. He was elected FRS in 1881. He attracted some publicity in 1910 as part of the expert team who examined the remains of Henry VI in St. George's Chapel, Windsor to try to determine the cause of death. First edition. Wallace's autobiography is hard to find in this edition, which contains a wealth of illustrations and incidents not found in the later one-volume editions. All of his most significant colleagues and sparring partners, including Darwin, Lyell, Spencer, Huxley and Owen, are recalled in detail, as well as his voyages, his scientific discoveries and his later interests in socialism and spiritualism. These two volumes provide a rounded portrait of this questing, unconventional man.
