The Witch at Ghoom.
- [Simla, c. 1897]. Original photograph (29 x 15 cm). This is a portrait of the Ghoom Buri (a beggar woman of Ghoom whom contemporary Englishmen called the “witch of Ghoom”). Ghum, as it is spelled now is a beautiful high-altitude village on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The begged at railway stations in Darjeeling, and was famous for her child-like innocent smile and kind demeanor. Bourne & Shepherd studios was initially founded in 1863, in Simla, by Samuel Bourne, a keen and extremely competent amateur photographer, newly arrived from England, and William Howard, already an established professional Calcutta studio photographer.
