Babysan: A Private Look at the Japanese Occupation [With] 11 Original Photographs from the Occupation
Tokyo: Kasuga Boeki K.K., [1953]. Reprint. Small octavo (18.25cm.); publisher's yellow pictorial card wrappers; 127pp.; illus. throughout. Light wear, textblock uniformly toned, else Very Good and sound. Raunchy full-page illustrations following the exploits of "Babysan," "A carefree and charming girl...[who] decided, in fact, to devote herself to the cause of American servicement in Japan." Accompanying the book is a small collection of photographs of a young Japanese woman and her American servicemen pals. The snap shots (all in Near Fine to Fine condition) all measure 12x8cm. save for two original photographic postercards (9x14cm.). The original photographs include casual and studio portraits of the young woman, the ball gown she wears in the studio photograph reappearing in a series of snapshots from a night on the town with a group of couples, all the women Japenese, all the men Americans in uniform. Additional photographs show the woman and her American boyfriend taking a stroll, the remaining a poker game, possibly taken by the woman herself. Presumably this is her copy of Babysan, perhaps given as a gift in poor taste.
