After being implicated in a conspiracy against Philippe, Duke of Orleans, Regent for Louis XV, she was committed to the Bastille for two years in 1718. Here she discovered a love for a fellow prisoner and conversely her gaoler developed a passion for her, both of them being aristocrats. In 1750 she entered upon a marriage with the Baron de Staal, arranged by the Duchesse to enhance her status. Her Memoirs, notable for their humour and frankness were first published in French in 1755 and have remained popular ever since. This second edition is very scarce; ESTC records only one UK copy, in Oxford, two in the US and two in Australia, the first edition also having one UK location, in the British Library.
