SYLVIE AND BRUNO
- CARROLL,LEWIS. SYLVIE AND BRUNO. London: Macmillan 1889. 8vo (5 1/4 x 7 1/2"), red cloth stamped in gold, all edges gilt, front gutter and right edge have small holes, rear corner soft, spine gilt dulled, preliminary pages foxed, overall really VG in custom chemise and 1/2 leather slipcase. First edition, xiv, 400p. + ads. THIS COPY IS INSCRIBED BY DODGSON IN PURPLE INK ON THE HALF-TITLE: "Mrs. Dubourg, With sincere regards from the Author. December 12, 1889." The Dubourgs's name comes up more than several times in the Journals and Letters of Lewis Carroll. Mr. Dubourg was an author and playwright who tried to get "Alice" produced on the stage. Carroll seemed especially interested in their daughter Evelyn who was either 10 or 12 when they first met. He stayed with the family and continued to see them over the years. Sylvie And Bruno is a fairy story based on characters from a story that Carroll wrote for Aunt Judy's magazine in 1874. Wonderfully illustrated by HARRY FURNISS with full and partial page drawings (using his daughter Dorothy as the model for Sylvie). This, with Sylvie and Bruno Concluded is considered by WMG "the last considerable work issued by Dodgson." (p.164). This is a nice copy with an interesting association. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
