NY: The Macmillan Company, 1947. 8vo., brownish-orange cloth in two variant dust jackets; 326 pages. First Edition, first printing (so stated) of the author's first book, which went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction even though the publisher and author had low expectations for its success. Signed presentation from Michener on the front endpaper, to a Macmillan representative: "To Bob White, One of the Macmillan gang, Jim Michener." In both the first and second state dust jackets. The best recollection of people involved in the publication of this title is that about 30 to 40 copies were prepared with multiple prices ($2.75; $3.00; $3.25 and $3.50) on the front flap. Most copies of this dust jacket variant were price-clipped when they entered the marketplace to reflect the eventual $3.00 price. The second state dust jacket is unclipped and has the $3.00 price printed on the bottom corner of the front flap. An uncommon book, especially hard to find in nice condition since the quality of the paper is poor. Rare in the first variant dust jacket and with a nice presentation by the author. An excellent copy! Very Good (covers nice with minor bump to one lower corner; contents clean & tight with the usual light tanning to the edges); the first state dust jacket has small chips, several tears, little soil & with a one-inch chip at the base of the spine; the second state dust jacket has a few tiny chips & tears with two tiny pieces of tape on the interior.
