Artist: Visscher Nicolas ( - 1679) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca 1660 1618 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Margin replaced with lower missing part; - size (in cm): 49 x 58,5; - description: Decorative map of Luxembourg with its surrounding countries. ;Officially the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg,i n the 14th and early 15th centuries, three members of the House of Luxembourg reigned as Holy Roman Emperors. In 1437, the House of Luxembourg suffered a succession crisis, precipitated by the lack of a male heir to assume the throne, which led to the territories being sold by Duchess Elisabeth to Philip the Good of Burgundy. In the following centuries, Luxembourg's fortress was steadily enlarged and strengthened by its successive occupants, the Bourbons, Habsburgs, Hohenzollerns and the French.; -vita of the artist: Nicolaes Visscher I (1618 -1679) Amsterdam was a Dutch engraver, cartographer and publisher. He was the son of Claes Janszoon Visscher. His son, Nicolaes Visscher II, also worked with him and continued the family tradition of mapmaking. He died in Amsterdam in 1709 and later after his death, many plates has been used from Petrus Schenk II (1693_1775) to issue other copies.
