The New African, February 27, 1971 Aisha-Istar
Republic of New Africa, Washington DC 1971 - Pictorial newsprint wraps with black titles and phtograph of Malcolm X. This copy has lighter than expected aging of newsprint along with a diagonal crease on bottom right front corner and a horizontal center fold for mailing; otherwise, this copy is about near fine. The New African was the uncommon journal of the Republic of New Africa. It was published sporadically after the founding of the organization in 1968. This issue, with numerous photgraphs of Malcolm X, was published on the sixth anniversary of Malcolm X's assassination. The Republic of New Africa (RNA) was established at The Black Government Conference in Detroit sponsored by the Malcolm X Society and the Group on Advanced Leadership (GOAL), two significant Detroit-based black organizations. This conference produced a Declaration of Independence to establish a separate Africa nation within the United States, eventually Hinds County, Mississippi. Robert F. Williams was chosen as the first president of the provisional government; attorney Milton Henry was named first vice president; and Betty Shabazz, widow of Malcolm X, served as second vice president. The organization had rocky existence that included buying land for the Nation in Mississippi, attempting to defend that land against Mississippi authorities, demanding reparations, and participating in several violent episodes. This newspaper/magazine seems to have been issued erratically. The only copies I have located are an incomplete run at the University o Michigan. WorldCat does not list any copies. This special issue on Malcom X also contains much information on the basic ideas of the RNA. This is an especially attractive copy of a seldom seen African-American newspaper, and a special issue on Malcolm X as well. ; Vol. 3, No. 3; B&W Illustrations; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 15 pages [Attributes: Soft Cover]
