Macmillan, London 1874 - This book was originally owned by the engineer, Captain John Ericsson, the designer of the Civil War ironclad "The Monitor". He has made about 10 lines of notes and references on the endpapers to cerain articles in the book. He has used red ink underlines and some marginal notes and markings. The book passed down to Captain Ericsson's chief engineer, Waldemar (Valdemar) Lassoe, who has inscibed the half-title page: "This book was the property of Capt. John Ericsson / Presented to W. W. Share / by Waldemar Lassoe / Chief Engineer to / Capt John Ericsson". Mr. Lassoe has also noted on the frontpaper "Notes by John Ericsson". The book needs rebinding: The binding is split; The somewhat soiled backstrip is chipped on the top and is detached; the slightly soiled covers are detached together with the last 2 leaves of the index and the endpaper. xxi, 676 generally very clean pages, with a small number of pages having the underlining and marginalia. The covers and the spine are the original, heavily gilt decorated blue cloth. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Square [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
