Gilt borders on each board with large central ornament in gilt. Raised bands. Marbled paper edges. Engraved frontispiece in each volume. Large engraved allegorical vignette on each title-page. Engraved initials and headpieces. First edition of this stunning "large Mortier Bible," profusely illustrated with 216 full-page engravings, as well as 5 double-page engraved maps and plans. The first volume has 142 full-page engravings: 1 full-page (Frontispiece), 140 full-page engravings with 2 images each, and one full-page engraving with 3 images (Noah's Ark).The second volume has 79 full-page engravings: 1 full-page (Frontispiece), 73 full-page engravings with 2 images each, and five folded engravings (Maps and Plans).Bindings rubbed along edges with head and tail of spines partly chipped, and a 7" closed tear along upper front joint of first volume. Text in Dutch. Bindings in fair to good-, interior in very good condition. About the editor: Pieter Mortier (1661-1711) was an 18th-century mapmaker and engraver from the Northern Netherlands. He traveled to Paris in 1681-1685 and won the privilege in 1690 of publishing maps and atlases by French publishers in Amsterdam. He used this privilege to win a similar set of privileges for printing an "illustrated print bible" in 1700. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
