A Thousand Days in the Arctic: 2 vols.; With preface by Admiral Sir F. Leopold McClintock; With Five Original Maps
Harper and Brothers 1899 - London and New York: Harper & Brothers, 1899. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 2 volumes. Thick 8vo. 1st U.K. edition. xxi + 551pp; xv + 580pp. B/w photo plates (1 folding), 5 folding colour maps, illus. Royal blue cloth, gilt. Not issued with a jacket. Modest foxing to some pages in both volumes. Cover bent on volume 2. A day-by-day journal of the Jackson-Harmsworth Expedition (1894-97). The party established winter quarters at Cape Flora, Franz Joseph Land, and remained there for 3 years. By sheer coincidence, Fridtjof Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen encountered Jackson's camp in June of 1896 during the Fram Expedition, and enjoyed several weeks of generous hospitality (after surviving through the winter on walrus and bear meat). Throughout their stay, the party made sledge journeys in the archipelago, surveyed, made scientific collections, hunted, and described the polar night. Also included is a chapter on scurvy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
