Modern History or the Present State of All Nations, Describing Their Respective Situations, Persons, Habits and Buildings, Manners, Laws and Customs, Plants, Animals and Minerals - the Fifth Volume on America Only
full contemporary calf on boards, modern calf spine, modern endpapers, spine inscribed 'Present State of Virginia', title page lacking, one plate only present, lacks maps and index; Volume five of the series on America only, it runs from pages 527 to 854, and contains the following chapters: La Plata or Paragua, Amazons, Spanish Islands, The Conclusion of Spanish America, Brazil; The British Plantations - Virginia, Maryland, New-England, Nova Scotia, New-Britain, New York, New Jersey &c., Pensylvania (sic), Carolina, British American Islands, French America, The Conclusion of the Present State of America. The one plate includes musk rat, land tortoise, Viper etc. There is slight worm damage to the final few leaves, but the text, apart from the omissions noted, is sound, clean and tight. This work seems to have been issued in parts, and complete sets are very rare. The pagination of this copy matches that of the edition published in Dublin in 1739 by W. Williamson. The author rhapsodises in his conclusion on the potential of the British colonies, whose description occupies most of the text, and urges gentlemen to emigrate there..
