Charles Dilly & William Creech, London & Edinburgh, 1786. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Poor Condition/No Dust Jacket. “Ancient Scotish Poems”, Never Before in Print. But Now Published from the Ms. Collections of Sir Richard Maitland, of Lethington, Knight, Lord Privy Seal of Scotland, and a Senator of the College of Justice. Comprising Pieces Written from about 1420 till 1586. With Preface, Large Notes, and a Glossary by John Pinkerton. Prefixed are: An Essay on the origin of Scotish poetry; A list of all the Scotish Poets, with brief remarks; a list of Synorthographic and Symphonious Words & listed the contents of the book. And an appendix is added, containing, among other articles, an account of the contents of the Maitland and Bannatyne Mss.; Glossary; Passages Not Understood; Words Not Understood; Additions and Corrections; and Proposals for Publication by Subscription. Printed for Charles Dilly (London) & for William Creech at Edinburgh, 1786. (William Creech also published Robert Burns although he does not appear in this volume's list of Scotish Poets as living poets are omitted.) At the rear is a page showing three facsimiles from the Folio MS. First Edition, complete in 2 vols. bound together. A scarce book worthy of rebinding & Pinkerton's comments are a joy to read: "In the original manuscripts the Poems here given are mingled with a vast heap o? rubbish; for the poets of these days did not know the art of throwing into the ?re, which yet is the greatest art of poetry." Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 558 pages. A few marks and notes in pencil to margins. Some wear to top & bottom of spine. inside front cover is the bookplate of the scholar of Scottish Gaelic George Henderson (1866-1912) plus a small label of a Glasgow bookseller & a few other previous owner names.. Gilt titles to black label spine (partially worn away). Bumping & wear to corners; front hinge starting though covers still firmly attached; extensive wear to inside of covers & some age browning to pages; front end-paper loose but present..
