An Introduction to the Study of Chinese Painting
London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1923. Pigskin leather, gilt letters on spine, gilt top edges, 261 text pp. plus 48 plate pages at rear; color plate as frontispiece; hand-made paper. A special edition of this treatment of Chinese painting. Approaches the subject matter in a series of essays defined by dynasties. One color plate appears as the frontispiece; the remaining 4 color plates and 44 BW plates appear at the rear of the volume with numbered tissue guards. This is #23 of only 50 copies, numbered and signed by the artist on opening colophon. A rare find indeed. VG- (Ex-art library with spine label remnant, bookplate, and small embossment on an early page; frontispiece page, tissue guard, and title page are lightly foxed; most pages are quite clean; back section tissue guards are lightly tanned; extra reinforcement of inner hinges; some light spotting on leather boards; average wear to outer spine and cover corners, rubbed down; overall quite nice for age and materials.).
