Mrs Miniver
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company,, 1940. Octavo. Original pink cloth, gilt titles to spine, with the dust jacket in publisher's card box, titles in purple on pink to lid. (Slight staining to top edge of box, light rubbing to corners). Light toning, corners of dust jacket clipped; a fine copy. First US edition, first printing. Originally published in the UK by Virago in 1939. The character of Mrs Miniver was originally created in 1937 for a series of newspaper columns in The Times. At first wholly domestic, the series quickly incorporated the approach of war and its effect on day to day British life, for example the Miniver family trip to purchase gas masks. This book was adapted into the 1942 film of the same name which won six Academy Awards in 1943 and was named to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant in 2009.
