From the press of S. Etheridge, for J. White, Thomas & Andrews, W. Spotswood, D. West, W.P. Blake, E. Larkin, & J. West, Boston [ Massachusetts ] 1796 - First American Edition. Two volumes. viii, [1], 10-408 ; 440 pages. 8vo. Early leather with red spine labels (significant loss to the label on volume 2). Joints starting on both volumes (worst on vol 2 lower front). Hinges still sound. Paper lightly browned, several gatherings heavily foxed, otherwise light foxing. Previous owner name and town inked on front flyleaf. Most interestingly, a large ticket has been affixed by a cord to the front pastedown indicating the book was loaned to an exhibition in 1797. It notes who loaned it (Thomas Munroe Shepherd), when it was published, the original cost ($4), and who owned it the year after publication (Levi Shepherd). Boards. Author attribution from OCLC/Worldcat. Kames was called to the bar in 1724 and was appointed a judge in the Court of Session in 1752. He became a lord of justiciary in 1763. He is best known for his Elements of Criticism, 3 vol. (1762), a work remarkable in the history of aesthetics for its attempt to equate beauty with what is pleasant to the natural senses of sight and hearing. (Encyclopedia Britannica)Thomas Munroe Shepherd was likely a resident of Northampton, Massachusetts. The town historical association has at least one item (a sampler) from the same period which he donated. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
