RICHARD AVEDON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY - Rare Fine Copy of The First Hardcover Edition/First Printing: Signed And Dated (In The Year of Publication) by Avedon
New York City, NY: Random House, 1993 - 1st Printing. Signed. 290 pages. Published in 1993. Massive retrospective volume of the photographer's oeuvre. The single most important book on the photographic art of Richard Avedon. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Richard Avedon and Random House: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 5 pounds. Brown cloth boards with red titles embossed on the cover and spine and full-size, closeup self-portrait pasted on the back, as issued. Photographs and brief Introduction by Richard Avedon. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Amilcare Pizzi in Milan, Italy to the highest standards. In glassine DJ with large flaps, as issued. Presents Richard Avedon's "An Autobiography". His finest and most representative work, culled from a career that at the time of publication (1993) had already spanned well over fifty years (from the 1940's through the early 1990's). The body of work is dazzling and almost staggering in its range: Portraiture, fashion shoots, male and female nudes, landscapes, personal "memento mori", documentary, snapshots. Still, Avedon's forte is the portrait: "He excels in brutally stark, black-and-white portraits that strip away pretensions and personas. Ezra Pound, Marilyn Monroe, Louis Armstrong, Rudolf Nureyev, Dorothy Parker, Janis Joplin, Andy Warhol, Samuel Beckett, Malcolm X, and Alberto Giacometti are among the luminaries indelibly captured. The juxtapositions of images are often meant to provoke or unsettle. Poet Allen Ginsberg, in a nude embrace with his lover Peter Orlovsky, shares facing pages with dour Henry Kissinger. There are intimate family snapshots, glimpses of the fashion world, documentary photos of the Civil Rights struggle. A Colorado meat packer, a Texas trucker, mental hospital patients, Vietnamese napalm victims, and corpses in Sicilian catacombs jostle with shots of Isak Dinesen, Gerald Ford, debutantes, and rock singers, generating an implicit 'dialogue' about power and powerlessness. A haunting portrait of and for our age" (Publishers Weekly). An absolute "must-have" title for Avedon collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black pen-marker on the front free endpaper by the photographer: "Avedon 1993". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a late-modern photography classic. This is one of few such signed and dated copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws ("Very Good") yet are priced as though they had collectible value. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 284 full-page and doublespread plates. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy.
