London: Printed for J. Johnson no. 72 St. Paul's Church Yard, 1777 - London: Printed for J. Johnson no. 72 St. Paul's Church Yard, 1777. 7 ¼ inches tall by 4 ½ inches wide and 2 inches deep; complete with half title; in contemporary calf, joints cracked. This volume has a blank sheet of paper inserted between every page and these are mostly annotated with additional entries. The ownership of this volume is unstated and unknown. The rare first edition of this handy dictionary of history and biography, compiled by Thomas Mortimer (1730-1810), author of Every Man his Own Broker (1761). Mortimer was no denizen of Grub-Street, making dictionaries to keep starvation at bay, he had been educated at Harrow and in 1762-8 he was British vice-consul for the Austrian Netherlands. His economic dictionaries are still considered valuable. In a lengthy preface Mortimer considers and acknowledges many of his predecessors: the original idea for the book arose from reading Priestley's charts of history and biography, and it is plain from many citations that Priestley was one of his chief sources.   Condition Report Externally Spine – fair to good condition – gilt titles to red label, worn and dry with loss to the top and base.
