Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Altona-Bahrenfeld / Walter Richter, Hamburg 1936 - 1st edition. 2 volumes, complete. A Very Good set in Good dust jackets. Large 4to., [Vol.1]127; [Vol.2] 185 pp., illustrated with 100's of b&w and color cigarette cards, affixed to the pages; large, 4 panel folding map at the rear of volume 1. Vibrant blue cloth in b&w photo-illustrated dust jackets. The dj's are chipped, particularly at the tips, crowns, feet, and the flap joints, with a small loss at each area; old (and on volume 2 newer) tape repairs on the reverse of the jackets; volume 2's front panel has a vertical tear, that has been repaired on the reverse. Some soiling on the blue cloth, light rubbing/shelf wear on the edges and tips. A Very Good set, in the scarce dust jackets. **** Volume 1 is the Winter Olympics, hosted in Germany in February 1936 at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. Volume 2 cover the Summer Olympic Games, which opened in August of 1936 in Berlin. These games were the first to be televised, and were used by Hitler's government as propaganda material to show off the new Germany and its people as the Master Race. Full of drama and tension, this Olympics were the backdrop of many great American atheletes as well: Jesse Owens, who won 4 gold in track (cigaretten cards located on pages 17, 23, 26, 27, 29, 40,46; Louis Zamperini, who did not medal, but served in the Military in WWII, being captured by the Japanese, and was made into a book and movie, UNBROKEN; and the rowing team from Univ. of Washington, who won the gold in the men's eight, and was the subject of the movie, The Boys In The Boat (cigaretten card located on page 86). The '36 Olympics was the first 'modern' Olympics, with many firsts that are still in use today, like the lighting of the torch ceremony to begin the games. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
