J & R Tonson 1739 - Printed for a Company of stationers, actually a rogue copy of the edition published for J & R Tonson. Engraved folding frontispiece of Milton and thirteen engraved full-page plates - one facing the start of each book. Floral head and tail pieces to each section. Original dark brown calf boards onlaid on a new leather spine with five raised bands and red leather label with title to spine. Blindstamped pattern and parallel borders to front and back cover. ( the frontis of the Tonson Editions here faces ' The Life of John Milton ). Damage to folding frontispiece now professionally repaired. Plate IV detached - trimmed to outer border of plate and then tipped in at a slight angle. Some foxing and stainng throughout. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall [Attributes: Hard Cover]
