Humboldt had spent several years in South America at the turn of the nineteenth century, where he had the opportunity to explore more volcanoes than any other European naturalist before him. His findings revealed the volcanic origin of the Andes, and helped to discredit the theories of "Neptunian" geologists who believed that all the Earth's rocks had formed by sedimentation. The atlas to Kleine Schrifteren includes several images of South American volcanoes.
