Glasgow. 1876. Privately published. - 1st edition. 96 PP with 8 lithograph plates, 2 text illustrations, and 5 maps (4 folding at rear, and one in text). Photographic portrait of Francis Napier on Frontispiece. Original green cloth with gilt edging, gilt title on spine. Light wear on corners and extremities of spine. Internal gutters are starting. This is the Port Adelaide Institute's library copy with its vignette pasted down on front cover, concealing the gilt device and a Port Adelaide Institute label "Notice to Subscribers" on the inside of the front cover. There are unobtrusive discreet stamps of the Institute throughout the book and a little light foxing. At the top of the title-page, a hand-written note: "James Grahame Esq - with Jas R Napier's compliments August/76". Ferguson: 13058. Ingleton: 6727. A very rare item. Published after the death of Napier from his account of the expedition undertaken by the South Australian Government in its search for suitable settlement sites in the north. The expedition left Newcastle, NSW, in April 1867, by steamer to Brisbane, thence to Cape York Peninsula., Gulf of Carpentaria, Liverpool River . discovery of the entrance to the Roper River .
