Bound in a most handsome contemporary binding of tree calf; flat spine with fine red leather title label lettered between Greek-key gilt; the compartments with floral decoration and stands of arms; gilt fillet of interleaving wreath pattern to boards; edges of boards gilt; single gilt fillet turn ins; marbled endpapers and yellow edges. The binding is a little rubbed and the upper joint is cracking but perfectly firm. xvii (includes extra vignette title page), 6 ( List of Subscribers ; Errata ), 391pp.; with 8 fine folding maps and plans engraved on copper by Woodman & Mutlow after drawings by the author. Lacking the plan of the Battle of Sholangur that should be opposite p.246 This volume comes from the library of Burton Constable Hall, an Elizabethan mansion near Hull and the front paste-down bears the armorial bookplate of William Constable, F.R.S; F.A.S. (1721-1791) He was an avid collector whose collection is now in the Museum of Hull. Sadly, Constables's hopes of cross breeding chickens with rabbits never came to pass!
