TALES OF MYSTERY AND HORROR .
Robert M. McBride & Co., New York 1920 - Octavo, pp. [1-2] [i-iv] v-xiii [xiv] [1-4] 5-303 [304: blank], four inserted plates, one signed W. T. Benda, others unattributed, original decorated gray cloth, front, spine and rear panels stamped in black. First U.S. edition. Collects twenty-six stories translated from the French by Alys Eyre Macklin with introduction by H. B. Irving. Published the same year in Britain as CRISES. "Level inherited the mantle of Villiers de l'Isle Adam as a master of the conte cruel, though he was a less subtle exponent of the art; several of his stories were adapted for the stage by the notorious Grand Guignol Theater in Paris, and his ghoulish twists are unparalleled, save perhaps by Robert Bloch." - Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-129. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 139. Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp. 263-64. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 3-146. Bleiler (1978), p. 123. Hubin (1994), p. 500. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). Just a touch of wear to cloth at upper spine end, tiny nick at top edge of front panel, a clean, tight, very good copy. (#130805) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
